CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

The nature of Life is ever flowing change. This is mirrored everywhere, even in our body. Every single one of our cells is swimming in a vital fluid, our very own primordial sea. It connects every cell with all the other cells. For this miraculous net of cell communication the possibility of free flow is needed as well as ample space.

This is what CranioSacral Therapy aims at: Creating wide space so that processes within our body (and soul) can happen in an unhindered and free way.

What is CranioSacral Therapy?

The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord between the cranium and the sacrum. CranioSacral therapy is a very gentle, hands-on method to evaluate and enhance its function.

There are close connections between the craniosacral system and the nerval, vasal and lymphatic systems, as well as the sceletal and hormonal system. This means that disease or malfunction in other body systems can influence the harmony or free flowing of the craniosacral system. On the other hand, malfunction of the craniosacral system can have effects on other parts of the body. All is connected with all.

CranioSacral Therapy postulates that dysbalances in the craniosacral system can manifest themselves in very different places and on various levels, for example as headaches or back pain, cervical problems, disk hernia, grinding of teeth, mandibular problems, anxiety and much more.

Using an extremely soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams practitioners aim to release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the whole central nervous system.

Body and soul – more than just manual therapy

I treat accordingly to John Upledger, an American osteopathic doctor who founded CranioSacral Therapy.  Empirically, he discovered in the 1970ies that a multitude of symptoms and physical troubles were connected with functional problems in the cranium and that in order to successfully adress these problems it was necessary to systematically treat body fasciae and nervous system membranes.  During his many years of practice he realized more and more that fascial and membrane tension are not just local phenomenae but that they could also be a physical imprint of a traumatic experience – in body and psyche.

Thus, besides manual treatment, CranioSacral Therapy also uses specific energetic-verbal techniques (somato-emotional release) in order to release tension and allow for a free flow and movement.  This differs greatly from many merely manual techniques: CranioSacral therapy consciously adresses and includes emotional factors. A truly holistic method.

Diving to the deeper levels

Usually, I work for some sessions with osteopathic techniques on a tissue level, to release fascial and muscular tension and the whole craniosacral system. Going deeper requires a great level of trust from both sides. Only once that is established, more levels can be included in the treatment. Many body-oriented therapists have experienced how our body can store traumatic experiences we suffered throughout our lives. Therefore, by deep body relaxation processes it should be possible to encounter emotional issues, that would not show themselves at all or in a very different manner by a mere cognitive-rational approach.

Trauma and somato-emotional release

CranioSacral Therapy is based on the assumption that in certain circumstances stored away energy or emotions can weaken the whole system to a great degree. This could cause reoccurring physical symptoms. These underlying emotional or energetic issues might require a solution before the body can truely heal. By specific techniques and positions, which will differ individually, and always in close contact and communication CranioSacral Therapy can support such a solution. This can be quite an intense process of self-awareness, and not only a single session.
